I will collect my thoughts and writing decisions on the latest Puffer and Clarissa chapter in this thread! It is interesting to go from Killer whale's most sympathetic chapter over to this one where he is comfortably at his worst! Let's look into that.

That's it for this writing breakdown! Now for the Sharon/baby Puffer story next week, which I'll have a lot to talk about.

Final note on Barry, he is based on Barnacles. Barnacles like to attach to whales for a free ride. Barry was probably hoping Killer Whale would look out for him if he proved to be valuable.

But Orcas are not ideal hosts for barnacles compared to whales. They are better at removing them. Theming!

At the end of the main story, even his personality is a front on some level. He does no know who he underneath it all. I think he is afraid to find out.

All of these things give some texture to his rampant antisocial behavior. Yes, he is a murderous cowardly fascist with no friends. But there is some element where he feels he gets to punish people for having a life he felt he could never choose.

The previous chapter does give further insight into Killer Whale's instinctive desire to mistreat anyone who's nice to him, like poor Barry-- he felt burned by Sharon's attempt at friendship/subsequent betrayal so he hates and mistrusts everyone... especially those who would try to be kind to him.

--Whereas Sharon would disobey Lord Jel in order to moderate his more violent impulses, Killer Whale disobeys him to be even worse. Tellingly, Killer Whale lasted waaay longer under Lord Jel than Sharon did.

In the system that he operates, Killer Whale is definitely corrupt. Showing him successfully doing stuff behind Lord Jel's back was my way of retroactively planting the seeds for his last-second attack against Lord Jel in the end. This is in contrast to Sharon's time under Lord Jel--

Fascism is stupid and self-destructive. Killer Whale murders a guy for saving his life and trying to befriend him. It's a total loss for his crew, and yet somehow a calculated decision, because Killer Whale has seen what happened to Sharon and does not want that to happen to him. He's insecure!

Barry, like most of Lord Jel's servants, sees Lord Jel as a godlike figure, so he's quite impressed with Killer whale's close proximity to their master. Killer Whale has some... mixed feelings on this-- he envies and wants to emulate his master, but also hates and fears him because he knows him.

Killer Whale briefly flips out when exposed to actual peril. A true coward, he does NOT like being in positions where he could face any kind of backlash. What else is new. But he notices the soldier who saved him. Getting noticed by your boss is a death sentence when it's Killer Whale.

The opening scene is just here to show what Killer Whale's day job actually is. He's a thug and a bully and only engages the enemy when he's sure of victory-- why risk defeat when you have to report it to Lord Jel?

Yeah like they clearly planned to get Ganondorf but in a way that would reveal his ill intent. It’s a case of the viewers knowing a lot about the character because he’s been in many games, but failing to consider that in this story, Ganondorf is an unknown factor to many.

It’s also important to note that Zelda did not know Ganondorf was the same person as the withered figure she encountered in the depths.
