That Weird Chicago Submarine Lady; also, a literal coyote who can type. Writing dog, history geek; she/her/DOG/etc. Romance at short notice is my specialty; deep space is my dwelling place, but I keep a flat in Berlin. Solidarity forever!

Of all the details, what I appreciate most is how the β€œtop elevation” confirms that, despite how it might appear from the side, the submersible is perfectly round, like those Imperial Russian monitors.

(This allows it to carry more armor than ships with a narrower beamβ€”important for submersibles)

Not to speak ill of my dad, but he was not what you would call a DIY Coyote. And while he bought power tools, I genuinely do not know why, because he never used them and there has not been a drill so aggravatingly stupid and ineffective since we taught kids to duck-and-cover from the A-bomb.

There are various methods by which the flags can be used as signals:

A series of flags can spell out a message, each flag representing a letter.
Individual flags have specific and standard meanings;[3] for example, diving support vessels raise the "A" (alfa) flag indicating their inability to move from their current location because they have a diver underwater and to warn other vessels to keep clear to avoid endangering the diver(s) with their propellers.

"their inability to move from their current location" is highlighted

39. Stan Rogers plays β€œMary Ellen Carter”—a song that (like β€œNorthwest Passage”) coincidentally starts with a G and a C if you play it like I doβ€”way too forking slow.

Ended the first four decades by putting some more ink inside me :3 the first chords dad taught me.

I gave up that time, and the next, but not the one after that and now it’s permanent so I guess I’m stuck playing forever.

Anyway g’morning, all!

Besides the mountains what I miss most about Colorado is the sky <3 it feels so vast and inviting.

Good morning, folks! I hope you’re doing well!

Okay, hear me out though.

Do you think, if we started yelling at people for not adding content warnings to any post that doesn’t mention American politics or Gaza, we could get the Mastodon crowd over here?

Rereading β€œYoung Men and Fire,” I’m struck by how unpolished and unfinished it clearly is and yet Maclean was so fucking good that even raw it is spellbinding. I think that disconnect may be why I love it.

FYI, I don’t know who needs to hear it (always wanted to say that) but if you suck at desoldering, like me, ignore false prophets who say the trick is β€œjust flux the hell out of it” >.> The trick is to add low-melt solder to the join and *then* flux the hell out of it. *Then* your desoldering braid.

The real advantage of the Arduino here is that I blew up two of them by being too cavalier with the voltage regulator circuit and I can just grab a replacement from the Arduino Box, flash it, and keep going >.>

I *think* Freezer Project is my first classic, reasonable use. The OLED is I2C and the sensors are 3 DS18B20s, so I'm only using 7 pins.

- 2 SDA/SCL
- 1 for sensor data
- 1 to read the 10k pot
- 1 PWM output
- 2 for 5V+ground

(board/pot/sensors/fan/screen all take power from the voltage regulator)

They changed security and maybe passport control. I spent like 35 minutes in the airport building and now about 25 waiting for everyone else to board. So weird!

The thing about people wishing you β€œsafe travels” when you’re flying is that you have literally no control over this. The only thing you can do is make things worse.

Okay mom! I’ll be sure not to kick out my window or use my stick welder in the lavatory!

Anyway good morning from BER Airport :p

You can print these masks, but UV-curing nail polish works extremely well for drawing fine traces, and when you remove the board from the solution you can just wash it in acetone and the remaining nail polish comes right off. It is quite convenient!

It is very easy if you have a need for circuit boards! Basically, you have a board with a thin layer of copper on it, and you dissolve the copper in a bath of iron or copper chloride, leaving behind whatever was protected by a mask you put on the copper beforehand.
