They covered almost every surface in every room. Spider plants and ferns hung from the ceiling, ficus and monstera popped out of floor vases, herbs sat on windowsills. Serena looked over at a small cactus holding a prominent position on her desk. It looked fine, of course. It’d been through much worse than a few days without water.

But that wasn’t all. Iggy seemed so comfortable and confident that Serena couldn’t imagine him any other way than what she knew. A fabulous and bright (and slightly erratic) character trapped in a body that didn’t feel like his own. For all Serena’s challenges with her inner thoughts and feelings, that wasn’t something she could understand. But she empathized.

Iggy is (*spoiler alert*) my first trans character. Being cishet, this was new, and I welcome feedback from the trans community (on whatever you can glean from this snort snippet, anyway 😜)

Crazy name coincidences from my novel, Post #1

There were a lot of strange coincidences with names I chose for my book characters.

#1: I called two Japanese sisters Kami and Sakura.

My partner and I adopted two bunnies... With those names. AFTER I named my characters!

I'm not sure what she's going to look like yet, it'll be a whole new world building experience. Her favorite form will be a panther, which is a tribute to my young self who was obsessed with Animorphs and that's what I wanted to be 😆

I loved it! I actually liked it a lot better than his Cerulean Sea novels (please, Internet, don't skewer me😅)

Am I alone in being disappointed when I see an obvious spelling/grammar mistake or extra word that wasn't deleted in a book's first chapter? Should be the most scrutinized part of your book! It's not a dealbreaker, just ruins the first impression a bit...

I'd never heard of this series but looks up my alley, adding to the list!

She's late 20s, and has a fear of making important decisions. She'd rather be told what to do and go do it. But because of her ability, she's expected to be a leader.

She's a shifter in a world where about 50% of the population can shift into animals. But she's an "omniform", someone who can essentially turn into any animal they want. Most are "monoforms" (one animal), and a smaller percentage are "polyforms" (a few animals). But omniforms are incredibly rare.

I simply meant everyone is looking to make their own big money, and that's why traditional publishing won't work for every author, no matter the quality of writing, because publishers want what will sell to the most people.

I never said I disagreed, just correcting the assumption. I spend all day watching what's going on in your country and being happy I live in mine, imperfect as it is. And if this were my other socials I'd be screaming alongside ya. I just want my Bluesky to be about books and writing.

The form letter rejections are possibly easier than sifting through the follow ups from people who may not have read the guidelines asking NOT to follow up. But that's complete guesswork. There's an audience out there for everyone, I just hope I can muster the time and energy to find mine

I wrote some backstory for the main character in the next novel I'm planning, and I went from "This idea is utter sh$t" to "k maybe it's alright", so that was juuust inspiring enough 🙃

A friend and I were just talking about the times we've felt we had to justify our existence. I'm sorry you've felt like that too. Writing my book was great therapy for that. Does your writing help?

I used to do that... And I'd just get disappointed to downright annoyed at the lack of editing and overall quality... It honestly stopped me from reading for a while until I got back to the library!
