I’ve never done a river cruise, but I see how they impact our village. I’ve done 23 major sea voyages. All I’m going to say is you can’t paint all the tourists with a broad brush. Period. There are all kinds.

I’m only inflammatory when necessary. Cruising is absolutely a two way street. I’ve literally grown up with this industry in South Florida and see what it does in ports (good, bad and ugly. You see it one way. Only bad. Frankly. That’s just BS.

It’s very clear that you think cruising is evil and only ignorant or bad people would cruise. Typical far left holier than thou attitude that has us living a far right dystopian nightmare. My conscience is plenty clean when it comes to how I travel and vacation.

I fundamentally disagree. I also think you do want a discussion or we wouldn’t be having one. But I’m hungry fat guy,so I’m going to go have lunch (animals will be consumed). I want the planet to be as healthy as possible too. But I don’t want to live in an eco hell anymore than a toxic wasteland .

Just what I said. The industry absolutely is moving towards a lesser impact on the environment, much like other industries. From fuels to ports used to standards for what is and isn’t allowed. I just get the feeling you’re saying that cruising is terrible and we should do away with it.

Absolutely not true. Destroying the places they visit is not good for the long term model. And many people don’t wake up every day thinking about how their actions affect the health of the planet because they don’t have the privilege of being able to.

The industry is absolutely working to make less of an environmental impact. And I’m very glad. But the fact is people impact the planet simply by living. And I’m going to enjoy cruising and flying and (shudder) air conditioning in my homes.

Well, the wife was explaining as someone who lives here now and has for decades. Tourism has grown here, just like it has in many (any?) popular places.

They want every ass in Bavaria in a church on Sunday. We might as well have a state religion.

Yup. That’s what some people term my life in a place that doesn’t know what AC is, think ice cubes are a crime against humanity & want me to go to a Catholic Church on Sundays, not shopping. But my point is simply that cruise tourism isn’t going away, nor would I want it to. I want it to be as respectful and responsible as possible. I don’t view it as all bad or all good at all, because I know the truth is in the middle.

Nürnberg is really a year round destination and has several large trade fairs. It’s not comparable to smaller river towns. My point (and the husband’s point I think as well) is that not all towns suffer the same issues from cruises.

Nuremberg gets tourists year round. Things slow down about the second week in January until March, but that’s most of the year. Our US home is in Fort Lauderdale and we’re 20 minutes from Port Everglades, one of the biggest cruise ports in the world.

This is so damn true. Even many wealthy people are taught to fear being outside of the country. Thankfully, they now (for 20 years) have Adventures By Disney.

This was my goal. Not marrying a crazy German woman and living in exile in ‘socialist utopia’ Bavaria, yet here I am.

That’s absolutely no different than Americans who go to the Grand Canyon take a family photo and get back in the car. But just as many are there for days or weeks hiking, sightseeing and enjoying. The majority of people are still not social media users, so you can get a very biased view on things.

I’m sure that’s true for many of them, although they’re still dropping money into the local economy. But it’s not true for all of them. I know Nuremberg needs Americans, other foreigners and Germans from other regions for our economy. I’m glad they’re here even if they can be annoying.

I think that’s a very broad generalization. Living in two homes on two continents that are both tourist destinations by both cruises (one sea, one river), plenty of tourists on them drop a fortune in the towns and many do come back on their own later. Over tourism is an issue globally, but…

They definitely go weirder here than McDonald’s (probably because @scotthanson.de crafts the menus for all the latter !) The thing is, and we’re not BK regulars, is I never see people eating the odder stuff. I did try one of their chicken sandwiches in a tortilla recently. It was … ok. But weird.

I’d get them both on the phone and tell them in wonderful American, which I’m sure they understand, that they need to get their shit together immediately and they owe you money for your time/inconvenience. I know things are different here, but they aren’t that different.

I think it’s more that it puts a town on a map for all kind of tourists. But I think it works better for bigger towns like Nuremberg, Cologne than smaller towns like Würzburg, Regensburg, Bamberg, Passau etc.
