The Running Man (2025)
More intelligent than the 87 version. Decent action, more heart. Haven't read the book so I don't know how it compares to that.
I enjoyed it

Know1ng (2009)
Sci-fi apocalypse story with Nicolas Cage.
I was expecting it to be cheesy, but it works, despite Cage's one facial expression, & one dramatic pose, and the religious overtones. The end of the world is nigh, predicted by numbers in a time capsule
Had a proper cry at the end

AmΓ©lie (2001)
I'm late to the party, as usual.
Gorgeous cinematography. Very French.
Quirky young woman tries to improve people's messy lives, but struggles to manage her own.
I read a book. It was eye opening
How the World Eats. Julian Baggini, 2024.
Philosopher, Baggini, explores the current (terrible) state of global food production; from hunter gathering to eco-pragmatism, and comes up with a holistic 5-point system for improvement

Much Ado About Nothing (1993)
Haven't seen this since it came out. All star cast of the best of British TV, plus Denzil Washington and Keanu Reeves, which feels a little strange.
I think you probably have to already like Shakespeare to enjoy it
Poster for Mothra (1961), given a 4/5 rating
#Zillathon2025 Gaiden: Mothra (1961)
This more offbeat kaiju film has a few pacing issues and the effects suddenly take a downturn at the climax, but a refreshing tone, plenty of charm, and an entertaining villain ensure it doesn't lose your attention.
Oh and Mothra's in it so that's also a plus
What fictional creature/villain traumatised you as a child?

Pitch Black (2000)
Fairly standard sci-fi premise of survivors of a crashed spaceship being picked off by ravenous beasties.
Vin Diesel as the anti-hero who can see in the dark.
I liked it well enough

Poster for Varan (1958), given a 1/5 rating
#Zillathon2025 Gaiden: Varan (1958)
This listless, dull-witted production was intended for TV, and it shows. The effects aren't up to par, our favourite actors are barely in it, and the plot is a mind-numbing connect-the-dots slog. The only one bringing their A-game is composer Akira Ifukube!

Creature With the Atom Brain (1955)

Cognitive scientist, Horowitz, takes a walk round the block. Then takes 11 more with a series of "experts" to get an idea of what each one of us is missing when we look around a familiar landscape

Cold Comfort Farm. Stella Gibbons, 1932

Donnie Darko (2001)
Always assumed I'd like this but my ex wouldn't let me watch it. Guess what? I did. 10/10, no notes.
Troubled teen, Donnie, starts seeing visions of a giant rabbit called Frank. Frank tells him that the world will end in 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds..

Tit's Up. Sarah Thornton, 2024
The first 3 sections were bold & informative. The 4th didn't seem to say much, & the 5th was disappointing.
Also found the book too USA centric, the US having its own brand of weird misogyny & hang-ups
Poster for The Mysterians (1957), given a 3/5 rating
#Zillathon2025 Gaiden: The Mysterians (1957)
Toho blend corny 50s sci-fi charm with their signature tokusatsu craft. The result is an action-packed spectacle, but the story (and monster) leave something to be desired. It's a bit silly, but not an unenjoyable watch if you're in the mood for it.
