I feel like I was giving generative AI too much credit in this thread so I should also say this:

AI can produce an image, but it can't DESIGN. It will never be able to design.

All of that to say, Autodesk software running on Linux would avoid the data theft risk.

They could be like the Valve of the design software world, being the catalyst for actual commercial adoption of Linux.

Yeah, it'll never happen but whatever.

The alternative is to scrape all of the work from a company's cloud storage, but that would probably require more direct permission and people can just move their data off Microsoft services.

So anyway, since the AI models have no useful data to train on, I can see a world where Microsoft implements some kind of 'Recall' like feature that pulls screenshots of your work and uses that as the training data it needs.

Steal your work, as you are working on it!

Asking AI to generate the design for a house would be like asking it to design a 3D RPG videogame and it sends back a JPEG of the title screen.

It's only done like 1% of the work and it's not even useful.

The stuff that is on Google in high volumes is bad amateur small scale residential floor plan layouts that were likely already generated by some kind of shitty tool online. It's awful data and not at all indicative of what real designers do.

Real construction documentation is never made public, you provide it to a client or project manager, and then that documentation goes to a building authority and then to a contractor. It should never be seen by anyone and so is not available to use as training data for AI.

So anyway, remember that laughable house floorplan that everyone dunked on a while ago? The one where it drew some bay windows ONTO the deck and you can see the handles?

It's bad because it's only been trained on the shitty data it can scrape off Google right now.

Firstly, I don't for a second believe that generative AI, even if trained with all the technical documentation in the world, will ever be able do the job of an architect or engineer.

But there is a world where people THINK that AI can do it good enough so they stop using professionals for this work

If Autodesk wants to save their business I think they have only one option and I'll give it to them for free:

Start developing your cad software for Linux and encourage professionals to use that version.
