Looks like it’s finally time to start that revolutionary urban fantasy campaign in Capital, The Greatest City in This or Any Age!

AS I LAY DYING by Faulkner

Not what I expected from my first Faulkner but I did enjoy it. I found the shifting perspectives to be interesting enough, but not sure I connected with it as much as I would have liked. Still think I’ll check out The Sound and the Fury at some point in the future.

DAWNSHARD by Brandon Sanderson

Tried the Graphic Audio for this and it was entertaining enough. I think I’m cooling on this series for a bit, so I’m going to step away from it for now.

BEOWULF

Did this one almost exclusively via audiobook. Seamus Heaney turns in a wonderful narration of his very own translation here. Thought a lot about how this text serves as an inspiration in Tolkien’s LotR. The people of Beowulf are transported to Middle-Earth and set squarely in Rohan.

OF MICE AND MEN

I really do love this style of prose that is completely stripped down, but not yet devoid of beauty. It feels picturesque in a way that is completely accessible and contains a great clarity.

OATHBRINGER

Didn’t love this! First time in the series I felt like the character arcs either took trajectories that weren’t rooted in what had come before or did but landed with a very dissatisfying thud. Couldn’t even really be saved by the patented Sanderlanche.

In which I play Lord Brocktree, a Badger Lord from the Priory of the Honey Tree. Shamelessly stolen/inspired by the Redwall books I was obsessed with as a kid.

After several months, finally was able to join the boys on discord RPG night for a session of Fabula Ultima. Really enjoy playing this system.

RING SHOUT

An entertaining piece of pulp fiction that lacked enough punch for me to love it, but I did like it. Breezy read for those looking for a flash of eldritch horror.

SAGA OF THE SWAMP THING, Vol. 1

I forgot to update this thread when I finished this last week. I did not write a full review on this, but I did enjoy it and plan to read more of this run later.

I thought for sure you meant Blade Runner 2049, but you’re really talking about of BR. This take is crazy.

Don’t think anyone has inspired my humble creative endeavors more than David Lynch. RIP to a giant.

David Lynch gave us the language we needed to better articulate the indescribable strangeness of our shared reality. β€œLynchian” is so overused because it’s a viscerally understandable word without any known synonyms. I can’t imagine a more beautiful artistic legacy than that.

2025 Reading Thread Inaugural Post:

I really want to get in the habit of more intentionally sharing my thoughts on what I read and watch this year, so I’ll be writing reviews of the books I read over on Goodreads and Fabled.

Haven’t posted much but have enjoyed the most restful holiday vacation for two weeks. Spent it renovating the loft into a library, started reading The Will of the Many, and watching movies and watching Gilmore Girls with my fiancΓ©e.

A β˜…β˜…β˜… review of Gladiator II (2024) I am starving for a movie that feels like giving its characters a satisfying narrative arc and clear motivations. I have no idea why anyone in this movie does anything they do. The action scenes were ...
