Eileithiya the Greek goddess of childbirth. Not much is given to her description or symbolic associations in ancient writing and art, so I leaned into the practice of midwifery to make her design feel more meaningful.

The Marvel Swimsuit Special is back today after decades! I was super into comics as a kid & for some reason I loved seeing my favorite comic characters lounging in swimsuit versions of their costumes. Here's a piece I did last year of Cyclops & Wolverine that definitely captures that spirit.

Khonsu is an Ancient Egyptian god of the moon. In the Cannibal Hymn, Khonsu disembowels other gods and provides their end-trails to the deceased pharaoh so that he may gain their immortality.

He is often depicted as either falcon-headed or a mummified child so I decided to split the difference.

Thank you! We really don't have enough fantasy inspired by ancient history which is a shame because the Bronze Age is such a slay in terms of aesthetics.

Elrond's design is modeled off of a variety of ancient sources, most notably Assyrian, with some medieval dagging such for fun. Gandalf is based off of the Quechua people who inhabit the Andean region of South America.

The source the author was referring to seems to come from an account of Pausanias. The shrine in question was to Eurynome, a name he said some in the region used as an epithet of Artemis. However, given the depiction of the goddess, he doubts the idol truly was Artemis. Still a fun concept though!

Artemis as undersea huntress. I found an article that spoke of an Arcadian shrine to a fish-tailed Artemis. This claim seemed dubious, but the image of Artemis as an underwater huntress took hold! She wears a fish scale alopekis and has seals as her companions as they are the dogs of the sea.
