Members of the Church of England’s parliament, the General Synod, are gathering in London today at the start of a busy week-long meeting.
It marks a significant moment in the Church’s history, as the first time Synod has met with the new Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullally, presiding, alongside the Archbishop of York.
Today’s agenda will be relatively short as formal Synod business doesn't get under way until late afternoon to enable members to travel from around the country and also to make time for the clergy bodies known as the Convocations as well as the House of Laity to meet separately.
There will be time at the start for Synod members to renew the rules on hybrid meetings, to enable some members to take part remotely, and a debate on the report by Synod’s Business Committee, which decides the agenda.
Then there will be time set aside for the first of two deep-dive question-and-answer sessions on a wide range of topics concerning the life of the Church.
February's General Synod opens today.
Here's what's coming up on the first day of the Church of England’s Synod.
📺 You can also tune in live to all the events this week at cofe.io/SynodLiveStream.

Good to hear good news from Christ Church, New Catton - my home church where I was baptised.
I am so pleased you had a warm welcome - unlike your predecessor Bishop Edward Stanley, back in November 1841 when the church was consecrated - he had his top hat knocked off!

Now that the daylight dies away,
By all thy grace and love,
Thee, Maker of the world, we pray
To watch our bed above.
Let dreams depart and phantoms fly,
The offspring of the night,
Keep us, like shrines, beneath thine eye,
Pure in our foe’s despite.
