my woke take is that entirely too many people feel entitled to the benefits of a social contract while not feeling bound by the responsibilities of said contract

We need to talk about Russell Vought – But Properly Why certain mainstream outlets insist on sanitizing Vought as a devout β€œsmall government” conservative – and what actually animates his war against pluralistic democracy

Sunday reading:

I wrote about the aggrieved extremist who is currently firing thousands of federal workers and ravaging state capacity based on conspiratorial nonsense - and about mainstream media’s infuriating tendency to sanitize Russell Vought and the regime he serves.

This week’s piece:

Just so everyone is clear, the main issue in the Supreme Court voting rights case tomorrow is whether it's racist against white people to enforce the Voting Rights Act.

I'm dead serious. We live in incredibly stupid times.

Fuck me this is bleak.
But please, do continue to use GenAI slop thumbnails for your YouTube videos, or your album art, or your book covers or whatever else. I'll continue to refuse to watch/listen/read any of them, knowing already they're not worth the time & that you're a disappointing lazy hack.

"Don't speak ill of the dead" being made into an unbreakable commandment by a culture that has done so much to shame away and erase any connection to ancestors in the cultures it oppresses is absolutely infuriating.

Be sure you take a moment today to remember Charlie Kirk for exactly who he was.

Watching all these centrist pundits stress the β€œcivility” of Charlie Kirk’s style without addressing the ugliness of his substance is giving me a renewed appreciation of how the civil, polite White Citizens’ Councils conned the same crowd into thinking they were distinct from the cruder Klan.

I shouldn't be shocked, but I'm still always brought up short to realize how many people think "civility" means "white people speaking in relatively calm voices" no matter what vile shit they say.

Charlie Kirk

I won't quote-tweet our main character of the day, but if your complaint is that Charlie Kirk's words are being taken out of context, I'd encourage you to skim through the Media Matters tag for his name. They have hundreds of posts about Kirk and most have longer clips that give the full context.

Saying this again: there is a scammer out there targeting newbie authors, claiming I'm one of their clients. They use different names, and I'm already pursuing legal action. But I have never worked with a PR company, editing service, or book packager, so anybody saying so is lying, period full stop.

Like a lot of people, I’ve not been buying much from Amazon lately. But I was just talking to an author in the sapphic books subreddit and they were saying their ebook royalties are down 40 percent since the boycott started. Forty percent!

This got me reconsidering the boycott strategy. I still plan to get most of my books from Kobo and the library system β€” but I might go back to KU, since KU’s monthly payment isn’t going to impact Amazon much, but it the lack of it might sink some small, indie, and queer authors.

Good to see this being discussed!

Many indies ARE now on Itch, Kobo, etc, but many others are locked into KU. The 90 day exclusivity lock is something to bear in mind. It can’t always be FAST.

It’s a hard road to navigate & indies are doing their best to stay afloat while following the readers.

Day 1, 03/19/2025:

384/330 words written! But I hate them and think I started the scene too late. I'll probably rewrite the whole thing when I get the chance. I'm not trying to make this first draft perfect, just semi- coherent 😬

a church sign ft. Jeremiah 8:20
a graveyard with a bare tree in the background
a dark skinned woman's right eye
a large dark figure in thick fog with its hands raised
a tree with pink flowers framing the moon
a see-through hand where the bones are seen
blue bottles hanging from tree
a neighborhood under a highway
a wooden bridge over a river in a forest.
