Childhood abuse & neglect aren't just "bad memories."
They are a systematic denial of care, a refusal to grant opportunities to grow & develop in healthy ways.
Recovery isn't about "letting go," its about creating systems of self-compassion, protection & acceptance, every day going forward.

I was not prepared for the grief in trauma recovery, especially for lost time & opportunities. Personal acceptance is a tool, but so is supportive community!

Maybe it's me, but when trying to dig out of a lifetime of trauma-driven pain & despair, "hope" seems like total BS.
We need a ton of self-compassion, plus the positive harnessing of anger to overcome our inertia.
Hope is born from these, it ainβt the cause of them.

The funny thing about recovery is learning so many things I thought were normal (even healthy!) & not worth questioning were just coping mechanisms. I didn't even know processing emotions like anger was a thing I could do, or would even want to try! ha!

For too long I was also "brainwashed" into thinking that all anger was bad, that only abusers show that emotion! But you're 100% correct - feeling anger and letting it flow out in constructive ways is healing.

I donβt know what stage of healing Iβm at, but Iβm more sad & more angry than Iβve ever been.
I can finally acknowledge the horrible things that happened to that poor child - me - were undeserved. My heart breaks for that kid. But that's also why I'm furious.
Healing ain't easy.

Our core belief of defectiveness doesnβt *tell* us we're broken β as if we need convincing over & over & over.
*Knowing* we are broken is the starting point for every moment of self-talk.
Survivors need to remind ourselves of our basic worth. This requires a foundation of self-compassion.β€οΈβπ©Ή

A lot of trauma recovery is understanding how emotions / nervous system dysregulation shape / distort survivors' "truth." Catch phrases like "[nervous system] state shapes story" or practices of cognitive diffusion are built upon the principle that the body/emotions shape perception.

Your metaphor of brake/governor resonates well with my understanding. Especially for low-level constant stress which is often propped up by shame/worthlessness. I think of examples like rumination or emotional flashbacks too, times I'm pulled into the past.

Agreed, I've always liked this definition of recovery: "not letting your past steal resources for living in the present."
Also, my relationship to pain shifted once I learned how to process it, actually feel it, cry & grieve. Learning self-compassionate, not further shame & despair, was critical.

An activated nervous system influences thought. For trauma survivors, it also shapes how we view ourselves - *our state shapes our story.*
We must learn to recognize state-specific thinking & cognitive distortions. Summon self-compassion, regulate, then reflect. β€οΈβπ©Ή
