A poem inspired by the statue of Sappho in Letchworth Garden City, a favourite writing spot of mine.

In the midst of moving home
a thousand-and-one mundane
hairsplitting thoughts
chase me from bed,
I'll be running on fumes today -
but I have coffee, a notebook,
and October wind
browbeating leaves
off the trees
in oceanic whisper hymns,
beckoning the tide
of my waking dreams, in.

A video poem inspired partly by dawn walks on the beaches of Catalonia last month, a Jim Morrison quote, and using an unusual narrator to answer my recurring question of "why am I up so early?" - complete with lapping Mediterranean waves and gorgeous views of Sitges.

Athlete
The first event I entered I won – it was a swim,
first in around 200 million, no medal for me – I had no neck;
nine months later I stood on the podium, soaking wet,
bawled my eyes out to celebrate.
Next event: Duathlon.
Stage one – a toddle across the concourse of the court
to my father and his solicitor; no idea who they were,
but at the end of my sprint my smile was returned.
Stage two was not up to me, down to a judge –
deemed me to be my father's son, in his eyes
(having failed the blood test) that was a loss,
no split decision here, it was unanimous. My prize?
Β£9 a fortnight for the next sixteen years, and my name,
some daddy issues, shame. It didn't feel like I'd won.
Next event: Iron man.
Fuelled by cold fusion where my heart was meant to be,
cardiovascular efficiency left no room for empathy.
caused damage on the field of play to cover myself in glory
with my ideas of what a man should be.
Maybe I should rehab my old injuries – quit competing,
take my losses graciously, throw out my expensive shoes,
hold a conference on the news, retire and live a humble life;
always take the scenic route, stop to enjoy the view,
at a pace I can enjoy, and run barefoot.

UK fifth-worst country in Europe for loss of green space to development Exclusive: 1,680 football pitches of protected natural land in England, Wales and Northern Ireland lost in five years * β€˜Desecration of landscape’: the fight over development in areas of outstanding natural beauty * Revealed: Europe losing 600 football pitches of nature and crop land a day Nature and farmland equivalent in size to that of the New Forest – 604 sq km – was lost to concrete and bricks and mortar in the UK between 2018 and 2023, according to an investigation by the Guardian and European partners. In the same period the loss of some of the most protected and special natural areas in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, known as national landscapes, reached 12 sq km; equivalent to 1,680 football pitches worth of natural land. Game Over
Lost in a maze, where
all that matters is levelling-up,
rapid consumption
gobbling up
everything
in sight. . . . .
Always against the clock,
fruits of labour never near,
surge from that pill fades
and you're vulnerable again. . . . .
All that matters is your Hi-Score
and of that I've had enough,
so I take my hands off the joystick
and let all
the ghosts
catch up

Thalassa
She keeps her counsel,
watching boats bow and sway
like disciples before a hidden altar.
She inhales whole forests,
teaches wind how to breathe,
rain how to fall,
stones how to wait.
Her voice is a pendulumβ€”
golden-faced, mercilessβ€”
swinging between lullaby and dirge.
At night, she lifts her hem of foam,
bares her salt-bitten throat to the moon,
and laughs in the language of glass
breaking itself smooth against her tongue.
