How can we evaluate GenAI as cultural technology?

#GenAI is cultural & social but most eval lean on technical benchmarks. In a new paper with 30+ researchers we introduce a framework that evaluates GenAI not only on performance, but on meaning

How Authors are Thinking About AI (Survey of 1,200+ Authors) We surveyed more than 1,200 authors to learn how they're thinking about generative AI as it relates to their work. Here's what they had to say.

Large survey conducted by Bookbub on how authors view generative AI. It shows that authors are divided on its use and the importance of ethical concerns among authors who don't use it. insights.bookbub.com/how-authors-...

My heart ached when I was reminded that Aaron Swartz was prosecuted for trying to make academic knowledge more accessible to the public. Meta, meanwhile, is doing it for their own bottom line. I'm going to guess that no one at Meta will be looking at spending 35 years in jail for this.

The AI Summit ends in rupture. AI accelerationists want pure expansion—more capital, energy, private infrastructure, no guard rails. Public interest camp supports labor, sustainability, shared data. safety, and oversight. The gap never looked wider. AI is in its empire era.

We show that these narratives conveyed values about creative work, in particular:
🔹 automation over manual work
🔹 efficiency over exploration
🔹 concept over execution
🔹 artifact over process
🔹 short-term over long-term skills

AI is not neutral. AI narratives have long carried stereotypes and political agendas. It comes with stories, values, and perspectives that influence how we perceive artistic work.

➡️ Little research has examined how these narratives operate in the creative and artistic sectors.
