If you take the 6 train to Bronx Park, you'll be near Bronx's Little Yemen. Much more of a low-rise neighborhood. Taking the 6 further out to Parkchester, where modernist towers-in-a-park style buildings weirdly combine residential and commercial units. Starling Ave is Bronx's Little Bangladesh

Taking the D or the 4 train to 161st/Grand Concourse gets you by Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Courthouses, and lots of great art deco buildings on Grand Concourse. Bronx's Little Ghana is nearby, and there's also good Jamaican, Dominican, and Mexican food nearby.

The busiest commercial district in the Bronx is Fordham Road. If you take the D to Fordham, it lets you off in the middle of the neighborhood, which also has a lot of cool art-deco architecture.
If you take the 2/5 train to 149th and third Avenue, you'll be at "the Hub", another busy area.
