I was shocked by Roland's casual remark at the end of the last podcast that SiA is nearly over. That is a seriously misjudged broadcasting tragedy - SiA is simply the best weekly science programme on the radio. Radio 4's similar progamme will be no substitute. Disaster.

The reversal in the US in the 1980s wasn't due only HIV. 'Dramatic cutbacks in public funding and in facilities for TB control and treatment as well as... all played critical roles in the emerging epidemic' (Bayer Annu. Rev. Public Health 1995, 16:307-326 replayed in academic.oup.com/book/59012).

The final "checklist of ethical questions to use to evaluate public health interventions" is worth reading, to see if you agree or disagree, and can say why.

These stats are frankly bonkers. If anybody is complaining about why they are waiting to see a GP. They need to ask why successive governments have not supported the same growth in GP numbers as it has hospital medic numbers.
