must be incredibly frustrating and disheartening to have federal funding that was promised to you for important work suddenly and arbitrarily ripped away

Project For Awesome 2025

FYI: You might know me as any number of things, but one of the things I am is a YouTuber who has been running a yearly charity event since 2007. That’s going to become apparent on my bsky feed over the next four or five days.

You can learn more about it at projectforawesome.com.

EXCLUSIVE: NSF starts vetting all grants to comply with Trump’s orders Grantee accounts remain frozen, while union accuses NSF of ignoring rules governing peer review

Exclusive: NSF this week began to search through billions of dollars of grants the agency has already awarded for anything touching on topics that President Donald Trump has criticized. And NSF has blocked grantees and trainees from accessing funds while the review is underway. scim.ag/3El0NZh

Fig 12 in M. Zakaria Goneim’s 1956 book The Lost Pyramid shows the remains of a ramp used in the construction of Sekhemkhet’s unfinished Step Pyramid at Saqqara, Goneim refers to them in the text as construction embankments. An excerpt from page 84: “To return again to the new pyramid: during the course of my excavations in the season of 1953-54, I found evidence which appears to confirm the above theory, although full confirmation can only be made after further investigation of the area surrounding the pyramid. On four sides of the structure I found traces of what are almost certainly construction embankments-the "foot-hold embank-ments" described above, which were intended to give the workmen access to the higher portions of the monument.
They are formed of tafl (chips of soft clay) from the underground galleries. An interesting fact which I noted is that the top of these embankments is higher than the present level of the pyramid, suggesting that it was originally built up to a higher level than the present one, and that the upper courses have been removed during quarrying operations.” Goneim, M.Z. (1956). The Lost Pyramid.

Damn I won’t be able to watch it, but I hope it goes well 👍🏻 also in doing some research on the pyramid of Sekhemkhet, some information you will useful when it comes to fake archaeology that I feel isn’t brought up nearly enough (source is The Lost Pyramid by M. Zakaria Goneim and more info in alt):

Idk what generation you belong to but I know I’m definitely not among the first generation to be affected by climate change nor the first that can do something about it. The EPA was created 54 years ago now.

In a new paper Matthews, Tabery, & @ent3c.bsky.social articulate a value-harm trade off framework to distinguish controversial from abhorrent science. Concluding: "genomic race science is not just controversial science but, rather, abhorrent science... because it is both valueless and harmful."
