Text of an email entitled New "gender questioning" guidance Yesterday's Radio 4 news bulletin at 18:00 began "The government has published its first guidance for schools in England for children who are questioning their gender..." in an item quoting the education correspondent on what the guidance *is* and Pepe Di'Iasio of the ASCL praising "this framework". This after an item on PM which Evan Davis introduced with "Schools in England have been waiting for practical guidance on how to handle and manage children who are questioning of their gender, and today it came. The guidance says...". I went to find the newly published guidance, and initially failed. There is a government statement on the subject - https://www.gov.uk/government/news/government-to-publish-new-gender-guidance-for-schools - which does outline what "the guidance says", and includes the usual supportive quotes from a variety of sources, including Paul Whiteman, general secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers, who says "We welcome the publication of this guidance for consultation...". The text of the statement begins "Schools and colleges *will soon* have clear and pragmatic guidance...", and the word "guidance" links to a consultation, due to finish on 22 April 2026. Then, "Legal duties *will* be absolutely clear *after* government embeds guidance within Keeping children safe in education, the established statutory safeguarding framework schools are expected to follow."
