Aral's been broken by the death of his goddess, but he's still loyal to his shade dragon partner, Triss. Lots of skulking around, big fights and close calls. Surprisingly introspective in places.

*spoilers*
Eugenides from Megan Whalen Turner's Queen's Thief series.
He's only the narrator for the first book - but in the following ones, he's still doing the same things, and we watch others being taken in. It's fabulous to see it from the outside.
Tall heron standing alert in wet grass, showing flared, finely barred neck feathers, a streaked chest, and a long sharp bill with a bright yellow eye.

As long as tense doesn't switch in the book, it doesn't matter for me

While there is a grimness to this, which seems inevitable due to the history, it was a compelling read. The ending was a surprise but I thought it matched the story.

The Embroidered Book by Kate Heartfield 1767: Two queens with a powerful secret will enchant the age. A blue, cloth-like background with floral images reminiscent of intricate embroidery dotted with jewels. Two small female profiles in metal face each other, hair up in elaborate styles.

There's some very creepy magic underpinning this alt history. Charlotte and Antoine (Marie Antoinette) change in very different ways over the years. I found myself referencing wikipedia to see how closely things matched -

Always love her take on fairy tales. Slightly creepy, amazing characters, and creative worlds.

At a doggy parade three young humans are walking a loaf shaped bulldog down a red carpet.
But wait!
Dog Loaf isn't stopping! (oh no!)
Dog Loaf is off the carpet and headed for the horizon. (Ahh)
Places to go and things to see!
Can they manage to turn him around?!
(They can... Eventually.) (3)
I really enjoy the dual journeys of Elliot and Luke in Sarah Reese Brennan's In Other Lands - especially with the Luke POV short story in Monstrous Affections. I like that it takes place over years, allowing for a lot of growth.

It is rainbow coloured and it loops and swirls about - in the center of it, poking about from amid the swirls, is the head of a black and white kitten. His paw is poking out from the bottom. It looks like he is wearing an extremely elaborate costume, the sort of thing youβd see on the red carpet at the Met Gala.
Made a hyperbolic plane for the cats to play with, Bandit has decided to wear it.

Book Cover for Fault Lines by Kelly Jennings Two people stand closely, facing the viewer. The older one has serious, wary, body language, with one hand out as if to bar the child beside her from moving forward. She is of ambiguous race, has short cropped hair and a semi-military dress. The child beside her reaches to her shoulder, with short straight hair in a bright orange. She has rounded and more childlike features. She's looking up at the first person with a mix of stoicism and fear. Behind them is a bright orange glow, fading into a futuristic city in the background.
Fault Lines by Kelly Jennings
This is a well thought out book, with the flashbacks slowly revealing more information. It's got a nice mix of dystopia, galactic politics, complex intrigue and factions. The evolving relationships are well done.

I won't read military fic, unless it's science fiction.
I don't read much historical, unless it's spec fic
In both, I like that buffer of unreality.
I don't read true crime either, I'd prefer to deal with imagined horrors than true ones.
