One of my favorite wildflowers (a naturalized import here in the US) is Dianthus armeria, the Deptford pink. The bloom is so small, easy to miss - yet such a beautiful reward when you finally notice it. Then you realize that there are hundreds of them all around you.

If you’ll indulge me… My dad had it on a 78rpm shellac disc. At one point one of my older siblings broke it in half. My dad glued it back together and continued to play it. Imagine folk music with a 156bpm out-of-sync beat. God, I miss my dad….

I spent 8 days backpacking on Isle Royale in 1998, with my brother and now ex-husband. Every day was a gift. Gorgeous, special place. We had a great time - missed black fly season, and most days we didn’t see any other people.

Lakes Michigan and Huron do that, too. Erie…kind of. Ontario, not really. But yeah, Superior most of all. (I grew up in Michigan, near enough to Lake Michigan that I could beach bum there once I got my driver’s license at 16. The Great Lakes remain my favorite natural wonder.)
