Fifteen years ago, in 2010, I wrote a letter from the future, exploring how humanity would respond if most of the theoretical catastrophes were to coincide. Today, it resurfaced, and there are some uncanny parallels to the current state of the world. 5 min read on Medium: medium.com/@peterlubeck...

I stumbled over this great video essay comparing the game design of Skyrim to one of my all-time favorites Gothic II. It manages to capture why I never felt at home in Skyrim, but long to play a game like Gothic again (minus the misogynistic yank). www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wZE...

Backing up your Kindle Books with “Download and Transfer” on Windows until February 26, 2025

As of February 26th, Amazon will remove the option to download and back up your purchased Kindle books, which means you will be completely locked into their ecosystem from that date. I suggest you download and back them up locally if you want to leave Amazon at any point in the future.

Ran into a bit of a hurdle. It seems bookshop.org is not the place to find ebooks, at least not right now. I hope they expand to include ebooks soon. For now, I'll try out Kobo's store. Wind and Truth, here we go!

Thanks for the tip! Sounds a bit like bookshop.org but for audio books.

The UI and branding alone makes it feel like a step up from Goodreads. Time will tell how it compares in practice.

That's it for now. As I go further down this rabbit hole, I will likely realize how tied up I am with products and services controlled by billionaires and oligarchs. It might become impossible to get out from their influence, but damn if I won't give it a try.

That leaves What's App, Oculus, Giphy and Threads in the Meta family, and I don't use any of them at this point. What's App can be replaced with Signal, and Threads with Bluesky. I'll just avoid Oculus and Giphy. I look forward to saying goodbye to Meta!

I'm torn about Instagram. At its best, it's been a great way to keep in touch and share with the important people in your life. At its worst, it's a bottomless black hole of despair. There are a few good options, but you could use Signal or Blue Sky to share images or short-form videos.

In terms of valid replacements for Facebook and Messenger, I'm currently looking to @bsky.app (for social) and Signal (for chats). However, only a fraction of my friends use those services right now. I'll try to move the most important group chats over to Signal in the near future.

Facebook no longer serves much purpose other than the friend list, as the feed is terrible and cluttered with spam. I won't miss any of that once I leave, but I might miss the occasional life update from people I don't meet that often.

26.01.2025 13:45 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Facebook is still the only place where I can keep track of the bulk of friends and acquaintances I've met over the years, simply because of its user base. To leave it completely, I'll need to think about whether or not it's relevant to try and migrate all of those contacts elsewhere.

Moving on to the big one: Zuck/Meta. This one will be the hardest in terms of usage, and the lack of valid alternatives, and I've been using Meta's services daily for more than 15 years to keep up-to-date with friends and family.

To summarize the Bezos/Amazon detox plan: Replace Kindle with Kobo and bookshop.org, Goodreads with StoryGraph/Hardcover. Stop using/avoid IMDb, Washington Post, MGM, Twitch and Ring. Avoid Prime Video, but likely make an exception for Wheel of Time. :)

That leaves Prime Video of the things in the Amazon portfolio I've used before. I'm not subscribed, but I am really looking forward to Wheel of Time Season 3 (and beyond). I will likely make an exception just to watch that. I can do without the other properties.
