Our next science comic, from the MacFarlane lab, is about macrophages, biopersistent fibres and how this is linked to mesothelioma.

Each comic, created with @claudiaflandoli.bsky.social tells a story from the microworld and relates it to real world research.

On the day we were awarded an #ERCAdG from the @erc.europa.eu, I want to highlight this non-science paper I wrote with β€ͺ@deefitzgerald.bsky.social‬ on research culture:

Why? Because I'm often told we need to chose between excellence and kindness

Well done the BMA ...

"This meeting condemns the Supreme Court ruling defining the term 'woman' with respect to the Equality Act as being based on 'biological sex', which they refer to as a person who 'was at birth of the female sex', as reductive, trans and intersex-exclusionary and biologically nonsensical.

Condemns scientifically illiterate rulings from the Supreme Court, made without consulting relevant experts and stakeholders, that will cause real-world harm to the trans, non-binary and intersex communities in this country"

Even accepting the premise that AI produces useful writing (which no one should), using AI in education is like using a forklift at the gym. The weights do not actually need to be moved from place to place. That is not the work. The work is what happens within you.

Of the list of departments reported on, not a list that anyone wants to be at the top of @mrc-tu.bsky.social
Hopefully real and lasting systemic changes can be made that allow scientists to do what they love in a supportive environment.

Check out this #mesothelioma comic developed by our partners at University of Cambridge. It's a great visual representation of our immune response to #asbestos fibres. Well worth a read!
Very well done to all involved @emilyself.bsky.social @davidoloughlin.bsky.social @claudiaflandoli.bsky.social

Mac is on a mission! πŸ”
This year @davidoloughlin.bsky.social and I worked with the brilliant @claudiaflandoli.bsky.social to create a comic based on our work on #Mesothelioma 🫁 🧬 !
You can read "Mac and Mission Fibre" and two other comics from our labs at shorturl.at/OkLJq

Top down photo mockup of three digital tablets, displaying the cover of three comics. "Exploring the Lungscape", showing three astronauts landing on a soft surface in a alien planet. "What's Wrong with this DNA", with a character with proteins for hair, looking in shock at a nucleotide. And "Mac and Mission Fibre", with a macrophage tackling a long and hard fibre.

This year I wrote and illustrated three science comics for the MRC Toxicology Unit in Cambridge: they are available to read for free at www.mrc-tox.cam.ac.uk/public-engag...

On Wednesday this week we hosted our first PREDICT-Meso Young Investigators’ Day in Glasgow. Blown away by the progress and quality of our PhD students & postdocs. The future of #mesothelioma research looks bright! @cruk-si.bsky.social @uofglasgow.bsky.social @djmurphylab2.bsky.social
