We found that E:I coupling to respiration shifts as people fall asleep. This means that in sleep, respiration modulates 1/f slope in a different phase than during wakefulness
Wake: 1/f slope peaks during expiration β peak cortical inhibition
Sleep: 1/f slope peaks during inspiration

Using overnight EEG and respiration recordings from 23 participants, we tracked aperiodic brain activity (1/f slope), a marker of excitation-inhibition (E:I) balance, across sleep stages and respiratory phase.
