If you found out a paper with striking results,
You should start with the critical point of view.
But it's not for the reason of lacking of trust.
What you know is unlike from what authors may knew.
When you have a critic of substantial length,
You can make it a paper and publish yourself.

Phase confusion: How inconsistent cardiac labeling obscures interoception research πŸ«€πŸ§

We unpack methodological incosistencies and propose a way forward with the HEARTS framework.

N2 sleep promotes the occurrence of β€˜aha’ moments in a perceptual insight task Sleep supports memory consolidation, but can it also facilitate memory reorganization? This study reveals that N2 sleep, but not N1 sleep during a nap, increases the likelihood of having an 'aha' mome...

Excited to share our latest work spearheaded by @anikaloewe.bsky.social & @maritpetzka.bsky.social. 20 min naps increased the chance to solve an insight task if sleep reached N2 stage; but the EEG spectral slope was the best predictor of insight dx.plos.org/10.1371/jour...

So: be careful out there! Analyzing HEPs is super easy if you have ECG+i/M/EEG recordings, but without proper controls, other signals can lead to spurious results.

In subjects performing an auditory oddball task, we found pre-stimulus HEPs to be related to: P300 amplitudes and reaction time speed. However, the effect disappeared when applying pseudotrial and surrogate heartbeat controls, revealing that overlapping activity was driving the HEP effect.

Are you sure that your Heartbeat Evoked Potential (HEP) effect is real?
In our new paper, we show that task-evoked activity can overlap with HEPs, creating false positive effects - unless you correct for it.
