How it started vs how it ended.

The criminal justice system only works if the defense side has passionate and occasionally endearingly curt opposition. We disagreed on almost everything. We shouldn't have been friends. I will miss greatly reading his court motions.

He highlighted passages with a sticky note on top of the book asking if I possessed the ability to read something I disagreed with. I called him and we talked for a while about the various ways he thought I was wrong. The journal is still sitting on my bookcase. I read it often

One of the first research paper I wrote about one of his ISIS clients was not particularly favorable to his defense arguments. A week later I got a nondescript package in the mail of a law journal that went hard in the paint against 'war on terrorism' cases.

He had one filing that was clearly written in a clever way to game an judge's ruling for mental incompetency. I asked him if he actually believed the drivel. His one line response: "I'm believe I have a responsibility to my client above all else."

I talked w/ Tom a lot over the last decade. He was a frequent defense attorney on terrorism cases. He always took my call and was quick to explain in animated terms how wrong DOJ was on a case. His zeal was equal parts infectious and adorably annoying. 🧵
