Jonas Salk was born on this day in 1914 in New York City. He is best known for developing the first safe and effective polio vaccine, one of the most significant medical breakthroughs of the 20th century. He famously refused to patent his vaccine or seek any profit from it. /1

Today in history, 1938: Chester Carlson invents the photocopier. He eventually made millions of dollars for his invention but lived modestly and gave away as much as $150 million in his lifetime, often anonymously, primarily to civil rights causes and educational institutions. /1

At this safety demo, Anchorage residents aim their bear spray at a foam target
The goal was to let participants actually practice using bear spray — so that if they run into a bear, it’s not their first time using it.
During a recent gathering at Kincaid Park, Anchorage trail users learned how to use bear spray — a skill that requires practice before sudden encounters.
"You’ll be a lot more prepared," said co-instructor Isabel Grant.

Interferometer Device Sees Text from a Mile Away
A high-resolution imaging system captures distant objects by shining laser light on them and detecting the reflected light.
Researchers have applied a technique from radio astronomy to image remote objects on Earth. The system, which uses laser beams to illuminate a target and telescopes to collect the reflected light, can resolve millimeter-wide letters at a distance of 1.36 km.

The Dutch East India Company (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie, VOC) introduced tea to the Netherlands as early as 1610 and dominated the European tea trade during the early 1600s. However, despite their efforts, they did not begin cultivating tea successfully until the 1800s.

By the early 8th century, tea had gained widespread popularity in northern China. Ennin enjoyed a tea ceremony with the influential official Li De-yu, seated on chairs in the "Gallery of Auspicious Images," which had been restored thanks to the generous contributions of Persian and Cham merchants.

Ennin, also known as Jikaku Daishi (慈覺大師), was a prominent priest of the Tendai school of Buddhism in Japan and served as its third Zasu. In 838, he joined a diplomatic mission to the Tang dynasty’s imperial court. Ennin brought various items, including powdered tea, as gifts for the Chinese.

With a common cup size of 200 ml and over 5 billion cups of tea consumed daily, the total daily tea consumption is approximately equal to the volume of 400 Olympic swimming pools.
