I've seen this happening for a long time--a long slow slide in expectations. One reason is that HS's don't assign actual books anymore.

Martin was killed for getting so pissed off at being profiled by Zimmerman that he circled back after running away, jumped Zimmerman, and began to give him a head-cracking, nose-bloodying beat-down. John Good testified to all this in his very first witness statement.

He's quoting Williams, and Williams didn't include the first names (Trayvon, Michael) in the quoted passage. So the reviewer inserted them into the quoted passage.

"Total refusal to engage with history"? That's a preposterous misrepresentation. As for Trayvon, TCW's error there--one of the few failings of the book--is that he doesn't engage with all the relevant facts and is thus biased toward Martin rather than dispassionate.

On the day he died, Trayvon was a tall, strong 17-year-old, not a boy. My own black son, now 19 and 255, was that sort of 17 year old, no longer the boy he'd once been, and I'd have been doing him a disservice if I failed to note the difference. Age-appropriate guidance.
