More Irish ended up abroad than in the country in the 1900s. Thereโ€™s too much to go into obviously but thereโ€™s a reason Biden, Obama, Kennedy etc all have Irish blood. As Toby in the west wing said โ€œyou gave us a couple good presidents and half the nypdโ€. Not getting into the materiel for the IRA

People are dunking on you but totally understandable. A bit of backstory, during the famine (wonโ€™t implicate you in that) under Cromwell and then then the late 1800s a huge diaspora of Ireland left the island. Obviously a lot ended up on the east coast. Thus nyc and Boston

Good. I donโ€™t want my browser doing my reading for me. Iโ€™ve been exclusively safari/webkit for decades. Front end devs hate when I report issues to them but itโ€™s their fault for only testing on Chrome.

Look, you can say a lot about Hogan's legacy: he was racist, he was terrible to his colleagues, he put himself above other people, he firmly believed in the supremacy of white people, he was a bad wrestler, his life was a net negative for society.

That's it. That's the post.

Tell that to Hungary or Serbia. Same thing and years without protests. They happening now after almost a decade.

Expanding mail-in and early voting, and moving voting from a Tuesday are by far the best and least disruptive ways to increase voter turnout.

We could just go the Australian way and make voting mandatory, host it on a Saturday, and give out democracy sausages at polling stations.

I'll add there's a massive age difference on experience with phones. Phone voting would substantially disenfranchise the elderly. The poor cannot often afford a phone with up-to-date operating systems, so they won't be able to run secure software.

Voting Software

Paper voting isn't a problem, the incentives are. Putting it on a Tuesday and limiting mail in voting is. If you want to mess with paper ballots you would need a massive in-person effort. If it's digital you have a single point of failure. As usual there's an XKCD for this xkcd.com/2030/

Iโ€™m petrified about todayโ€™s science news. Genetically modifying crabs to have cheetah genes? This could go sideways fast.

Interesting but categorically wrong for the vast majority of global English speakers. Simon Winchester describe the argument of descriptivism vs prescriptivism when the OED was first devised (the former won). Spain has its own prescriptivist academy which people (properly) ignore.

Scarfolk Council Scarfolk is a town in North West England that did not progress beyond 1979. Instead, the entire decade of the 1970s loops ad infinitum. Here in Scarfolk, pagan rituals blend seamlessly with science; h...

If you're not familiar with Scarfolk, my apologies, it's an art project satirizing the mid-70's in industrial towns in England. It's also hilarious scarfolk.blogspot.com

Iโ€™ve been a rails dev for 20 years, never been to a conference for it and Philly is very accessible. The ticket price isnโ€™t an easy pull however ($1200?! Thatโ€™s as much as my COBRA payment).

Is it worth it?

I just realized I hit the NYC jackpot: turns out my apartment is rent stabilized (and has been since it was built). Landlord never told me, but the extremely generous and low rent increases every year make a lot more sense now.

Agreed. If this sort of graphic is going to be used stylize it as a sketch or cartoon. Or donโ€™t use AI at all and pay for a graphics department like you would have 3 years ago.

How Palantir is expanding the surveillance state If you think the government will only use these tools to track illegal immigrants, think again.

Perhaps when we worry about Big Tech, we should spend less time focused on social media and more time focused on the companies actively helping to expand the surveillance state reason.com/2025/06/02/p...

Do you *really* need to know how it works or is it the newest hype word to distract from the fact that AI models aren't getting substantially better, and aren't very useful past boiler-plate problems, but the Anthropics and OpenAIs of the world need to keep goosing their stock prices?

In my experience the EU is a massively mixed bag on allergies. Only 10 years ago Iโ€™d get blank stares and definitely ended up in a few hospitals living there, while I only had it happen once in my life in the US.

From the ExperiencedDevs community on Reddit: My new hobby: watching AI slowly drive Microsoft employees insane Explore this post and more from the ExperiencedDevs community

Oh my god, Copilot is allowed to create and fix issues on Microsoft github repos and it goes exactly as you'd have imagined.

Try going into any of these PRs commits to see poor Microsoft engineers try to coerce Copilot into doing literally anything right.
