Speaking from lived experience, it is so easy to internalize that blame instead of placing it where it truly belongs–on the person, people, or systems that hurt you.

Never mind that we live in an extremely greedy, egotistical, apathetic society that cares more about profits than people. Never mind that we live in a society where power and control rule every decision, and those who have empathy and emotional maturity somehow are considered weak people.

You start to wonder if it's something you deserve, if you deserve to suffer, if you deserve pain, if you deserve all the trauma. You start to wonder if you're cursed, if the universe itself is against you, or that you're a horrible person and you somehow deserve all of this.

I was just reminded about how to meet myself again after going through so much trauma. It's one thing to go through one traumatic event, it's another thing to experience one horrific thing after another.

A moment ago, my father said they ate rice with tree leaves today.
But that wasn’t what broke him.
He cried as he said,I’m just glad your little sisters went to bed with full stomachs
And me?Far away,carrying his words like a wound.
What’s it like—being safe while your family starves?

Self love is hard when you're taught to fear so much: the unknown, authority figures, what can't be controlled, major changes, etc. Fear and love are opposite emotions, but they exist within all of us. So, it helps to learn balance...(1)

Still, it's never too late to learn, if you're willing to work on it...if you're willing.

Truly, self awareness, empathy and maturity go hand in hand. Empathy is something we're supposed to learn early, and self awareness helps us to learn as we mature. Without that empathy and self awareness, we can stay emotionally immature, selfish and cruel.
