Among Oscar hosts, Conan is, weirdly, closest in tone to Bob Hope--genial, evenhandedly deprecating and SELF-deprecating, vaguely alienated by almost all the movies.

When has there been a non-jokey opening monologue? Maybe after 9/11? Even then I think there was at least an attempt at levity. People just love to complain.
