Benthic siphonophores! aka Sea Dandelions! GORGEOUS, weird & deadly! All those thin threads? stinging cells! but also holding the animal in place. It has created a curtain of death around it as food gets stung and eaten! #okeanos Lumpy Seamount North Atlantic #saveNOAA

This octopus is a sucker for jellies πβ¨οΈβ

The seven-armed octopus, Haliphron atlanticus, has only been observed by MBARIβs ROVs three times in more than three decades. This one was holding the bell of an egg-yolk jellyfish in its armsβperhaps using its meal for defense or to help catch more prey.

Kind of Valentineβs Day related. One of my favorite videos I've taken, showing a female Oreochromis amphimelas releasing her fry.
This is an endangered species; however, they breed readily in captivity, so maybe there is still hope!

Beautiful fish. I have the exact same story with one, what are the odds. It was alone at the pet store about 7 years ago and still lives in my community tank. I also havenβt been certain on the species so thank you!
Currently have it as my banner as well and hope to get it tattooed :)

Toughest fish on Earth? Mummichogs are a euryhaline species, which means they can survive a range of salinities from freshwater to water that has 110g salt/L. Heralded as the first fish species in outer space, they even evolved resistance to toxic chemicals that would kill other fish. #TeleostTalk π§ͺ

Ninespine stickleback (Pungitius pungitius)
The UKβs smallest freshwater fish, the ninespine stickleback (Pungitius pungitius).
If you look closely, you can see the nine spines in front of the dorsal fin, from which it gets its name.

A pygmy seahorse hiding in a soft coral. The seahorse is whitish with red nodules, which resemble the colours of the coral it lives on.
If you go diving in SE Asia and you have a camera, you have a legal requirement to take this photo when the opportunity presents itself. I don't make the rules.

So many incredible speakers introducing me to lots of new aspects of animal behaviour. Featured in the photos in order are Sally Street, @vd0ubleu.bsky.social, Arezo Shamsgovar and @elisabettaversace.bsky.social who were just a few of the brilliant speakers.
I hope I havenβt missed anyoneβs @.

African butterfly fish are found in calm waters in the Niger and Congo basins. They are obligate air-breathers and are capable of gliding short distances!

For my first post on the new app I wanted to introduce everyone to a species they may not know much about and my favourite animal. The African butterfly fish (Pantodon buchholzi). They get their name from their beautiful pectoral fins that resemble a butterfly from above.
