at the same time, I think one of the greatest strengths of games is that people can experience them like this as well. people can walk away from the same game with so many different experiences

the hardware itself, the history of the development, changes in the zeitgeist as time goes on, new advancements and applications of tech, all of these are unique aspects of the medium worth appreciating in their own right.

at the same time, if 'toy' is your goal, then the rules change, and it suddenly makes perfect sense for everything to run like butter and for the controls to let you do anything you could want.
neither of these are objectively 'correct', it's more about goals and expectations, both dev and player.

game developers in the 80s/90s/00s working with the limitations would understandably not understand the desire to recreate those limitations. But those things that were made in this way create a specific mood and feeling, and I think it's short sighted to deny this from an artistic perspective

I personally think that framerate, performance, and controls are valued differently if you're viewing a game from an 'art' or 'toy' perspective, and the insinuation in this video that 60 fps objectively improves OoT is something that only works if you come at it from one direction

I personally feel that one of the coolest things about video games as a medium is that they have the versatility to be both toy and art, sometimes at once or sometimes singularly, and to differing degrees.

I find myself disagreeing with Nerrel on many points in most of his videos (I agree with him a lot too), but I think he asks many of the right questions and presents them in very succinct and poignant ways.

if you fully reduce video games from art to dopamine hits, and if you jettison aesthetics other than violence, war, guns, and advertising, it seems plausible you'd fail to compete vs the dopamine hit that is orgasm and the life-affirming aesthetics of human connection, the sensual, and the erotic.
