"Service" does include a willing acceptance of the risk of death in combat, which is a large part of why we honor service members, but the emphasis is still on _service_, not slaughter. To call them "warfighters" is to reduce them to NPCs in a tyrant's fantasy of conquest.

In contrast, the term "service members" recognizes many forms of service: distrubuting humanitarian aid. Rescuing mariners in distress (Coast Guard). Fixing planes. Managing supply chains. Swabbing decks. The boring but vital job of standing guard as a deterrent to aggression.

In reading about the latest Hegseth fiasco, I noticed that he refers to people in the armed forces not as service members but as "warfighters." I find this both depressing and enraging, as it implies that all service members are or should be engaged in combat as their sole function.

I hope and believe that many service members take seriously the oath they swore to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic" as part of their service to the nation.
