I used to feel a strange insecurity over the fact that I didn’t speak my ex’s native language. I always wondered if he’d have been happier with someone who did.

Turns out, it’s not about the language at all. R💟 doesn’t speak Filipino, yet he understands me better than anyone. He SEES me.

& I think if I dated someone who’s fully from one of my backgrounds - that is, fully Filipino or fully Scottish - I’d still struggle to make them understand some of the idiosyncrasies that come with being mixed. I don’t have that issue with my partner at all - he just understands me fully. It’s nice

I think my mum gets it because when I was telling her about R💟 & his background a few months ago she said this in delight: “Oh so he’s mestizo too! You’re the same”

My BF is also Wasian + he grew up in Hong Kong. Obviously our contexts are still pretty different but it’s cool that I can talk to him about things like, IDK, the family dynamics on my Asian side & he just ✨gets it✨

I think it’s great when people of extremely different backgrounds get together - after all, I am the product of such a union. But there is something to be said for how wonderfully comfortable it is to date someone who’s similar to you in that sense

Spent another lovely Saturday morning volunteering at our local library.

I’m an engagement volunteer for an exhibit that’s held in the gallery space there, & one of the visitors told me I must feel very lucky to constantly be around such beautiful paintings. She’s right, I do feel very lucky :)
