I never particularly cared for the sound of MIDI files being played on soundfonts that tried to make them sound realistic
The Roland MT-32 is about as good as it gets, and I think even that is just okay -- perfectly listenable sure, but not my style

I find fancy modern HUDs conflict with the retro, pixelated style of Doom, so I stick to enhanced versions of the vanilla status bar. I use NashBar (forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.ph...) or sometimes my own HUD (forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.ph...).

I've been less happy with GIMP ever since they made it so that pasting image data creates a new layer instead of a floating selection
