This convo I had highlights the difference in what "respect your time" means in games.

A lot of players want to trade time for in-game progress. It's purely transactional: 1 hour = 1 progress

But I want to feel like my actions matter i.e. what I do with time creates progress, not time itself.

The other side is then “how can I get a Nobel by studying AI” and now youre entwined in the barreling thoughtless “progress” of tech. Everyone becomes compromised and the only escape is escape.

Being on the fixing side of things like I was is all the harder. You just watch people do the stupidest shit and know there will be messes that can’t be cleaned. No matter how many economists and psychologists and humanists say smart things, big tech follows the same path.

This is unfortunately so true and part of why I’m glad to just be making video games now. As depressing as this is, it’s worse the closer you are to it.
