Apocalypse bled out after being beaten by Stryfe in X-Cutioner's Song, but that would have sucked if that was his final death !

Next era is the Age of Apocalypse!!!!!

The fourth and final story is in the Cable book, "Fathers and Sons", where the time traveling Askani, "Tolliver" aka Cable's son Tyler, Styfe (as a presence within Cable), and Domino all return to cap off the X-Cutioner's Song saga. Cable is finally revealed to be Cyclops' true kid, and it's nice :)

The bone claws are a huge retcon to old comics where his claws are said to not be his mutant power but whatever.

Fatal Attractions also introduces the mysterious Exodus, a zealot for Magneto who plays a pivotal role in the repetitive-but-well-written Avengers crossover story Bloodties.

By the end of this book, Colossus has abandoned the X-Men and Xavier's dream to join the acolytes, Magneto has had his mind wiped, and Wolverine's skeletal adamantium has been ripped out - but his claws remain. He leaves the team shortly after

Thus we make it to probably the era's highlight, Fatal Attractions, where Magneto finally snaps, creating Avalon as a new home for mutants and detonating a planet-wide EMP, killing millions. This is really his last go as a villain, and it goes immensely hard.

Colossus goes through the wringer this era - his brother is revealed to be alive but is a vengeful murderer who kills himself, then his family is mowed down by the Russian government, and finally Illyana (de-aged after Inferno) dies of the Legacy Virus

After this, two things happen. One - Psylocke is revealed to have been split between two individuals; Betsy and Kwannon. Kwannon herself was also split between the two. It's weird.

Secondly, Stryfe's "Legacy Virus" surfaces, threatening mutants worldwide.

And no, X-Cutioner's Song does not involve the character X-Cutioner, who was introduced shortly after in an annual. These writers were big fans of their X puns.

The second half of the era is fucking event heaven. Firstly is the iconic X-Cutioner's Song. This one's a bit overstuffed - Apocalypse, Mr. Sinister, *and* Stryfe are major threats - but I still think it's a pretty damn strong cap on the Cable/Stryfe/Cyclops/Jean story arc.

For what it's worth, Cable unfortunately becomes the main character for a lot of dumb things in this era. He got both a mini as well as an ongoing and both of them are really fucking boring, GI Joe tier stuff.

Might be up some people's alley but they were a chore for me

Then, something weird happens. Rob Liefeld leaves to go make fucking Youngblood, and Fabian Nicieza takes over.

And suddenly, it gets.. good? Many of the characters start to take form, Sunspot and Rictor return, it's not New Mutants tier but it's still solid (even if I wish Cable didn't come back)

Oh yeah Deadpool was also introduced very nonchalantly in these issues, working for "Tolliver", a mystery character who doesn't really go anywhere until it's brought back up near the very end.

And then, of course, there's Rob Liefeld's X-Force. The first few issues of this are peak slop.

Some OK plots completely atomized by the insane art and the awful scripts that gives hardly any character any depth. Domino, Shatterstar, Feral, etc are barely even characters.

Also in this era is Peter David's run on X-Factor, which ditches the original five for what is essentially a B-team. That being said, this is legendary and rightly so, Peter David is so great at writing a team book and there are so many awesome stories here. Idk how he made Multiple Man the best one

Logan goes through a lot this era as he slowly begins to unpack his memories, meeting plenty of faces from his past like John Wraith and Silver Fox, his other lover who he thought dead. She then dies a second time for real, taking another lover for Logan off the board. It's kind of messy.

Three major events happen in the lead-up to the next big event. Firstly is the death of Mariko Yoshida, Wolverine's lover, at the hands of Matsu'o Tsurayaba in Logan's ongoing solo book. Along with this, the vengeful Hazard seeks revenge on Charles and Gambit reunites with his ex-wife, Belladonna.

Bishop is kind of the best and worst thing to happen in the book during this era? On one hand, he's dope. His turn from villain to hero, and becoming an X-Man after having looked up to them as heroes, makes him super interesting.

That being said, time travel stuff gets.. a tad heady in this era.

Fabian Cortez isn't my favorite villain, but it is funny he is the closest X-Men has to a proper ass grifter.

Later issues explore Wolverine's origins surrounding Weapon X, Sabretooth, and Omega Red.

Then, later, the team faces off with the elusive time-traveler Bishop in his debut

It's very clear Jim Lee's stuff influenced not only MvC but also the 92 cartoon.

X-Men begins with Magneto's re-emergence, now returning to villainy (fairly well built up in the last era), now having formed a new Asteroid M and aided by the newly formed group of Acolytes, led by Fabian Cortez

-him, but man do these issues feel so different and refreshing. Jim Lee's artwork is so utterly incredible. Also, for what it's worth there is almost no difference between X-Men and Uncanny besides the teams (the stories are written and drawn very similar).

In terms of the actual X-Men story, after Muir Island the team becomes broken off into two teams, with one (lead by Storm) continuing into Uncanny while the other (lead by Cyclops) starts a new book just called X-Men.

The first 3 issues of X-Men are incredible - Claremont wrote these, and I love-

Oddly, the peak for me wasn't the big Infinity Gauntlet story, but the "ThanosQuest" mini, which shows Thanos' journey to obtain the stones. Written by Starlin but the real star of the show is Ron Lim's incredible artwork that gives the whole thing a unique otherworldly vibe. Definitely worth a read

Alright era 6 is complete!

First is the lengthy Infinity Gauntlet mini-arc, which is mostly unrelated to X-Men but was still a fun read mainly because I got to read some great Jim Starlin Silver Surfer stuff.
