A sandhill crane steps through short brown grass. It's in profile with the head to the left and the bustle of tail feathers to the right. The black beak is long and narrow. The head features a bald red forehead and yellow eye, a white cheek, and a light gray back of the head and neck. The body is dominated by mottled gray feathers, with a few rust-colored feathers also present. The tail continues the mottled gray theme. The legs and feet are black. Behind the featured crane, a blurry second crane has bent over to feed.

Soon the sandhill cranes (Antigone canadensis) will be headed back north, so I'm enjoying them while I can. Photo taken at Valle de Oro NWR, Albuquerque on February 11, 2026.
