Remarkable video captures fault slip in the Myanmar earthquake We deep dive the possibilities presented by a witnessed rupture

⚒️ 🧪

Two weeks ago, a video appeared showing slip in the Myanmar earthquake - the first time this has ever been recorded on video.

What can we learn from it? We deep-dive the science.

When I looked through the EGU25 program, I immediately knew I wanted to write about AI and science - so I did!

I'm considering writing a part 2 so, feel free to comment, thoughts on AI/LLMs in science? Anything is welcome!

M6.5 earthquake strikes remote Norwegian island We look at the fascinating setting of this event

🧪⚒️

A M6.5 earthquake shook the remote Norwegian island of Jan Mayen earlier today - reported felt by two of the very few people stationed there over winter. What's going on up there in the Arctic? We explore the geology, history, and geography.

Read our new post, with updates on the seismic swarm in Greece. The seismicity seems to be migrating to the northeast, and maximum depths are shallowing. Rates of seismicity have held pretty steady since Feb 2.

Topographic map of the area around Santorini in Greece. Thin black lines show faults, largely oriented northeast-southwest. Red dots show earthquake epicenters since January 1, 2025, clustered northeast of Santorini. Earthquakes are projected to the right onto a timeline, indicating that a new swarm of seismicity started at the end of January and has expanded in the days since then. Below the map is a compiled timeline of earthquakes since January 1. The largest earthquakes are in the high magnitude-4s.

Hi @vanhinsbergen.bsky.social. That seems like a reasonable explanation. The earthquakes are occurring NE of Santorini, in an area known as the Santorini-Amorgos zone. This area has a number of mapped NE-SW-trending normal faults.

SW Baltic Sea faults were quite active in the last 200 ka, related to release of Saalian and Weichselian ice sheets induced stress release. See new study by Seidel et al.: doi.org/10.1111/bor..... Also show a snapshot where future earthquakes (next 1000 a) may be related to such stresses.

A bird's-eye view of a former Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp showing a wide dirt pathway flanked by parallel rows of barbed-wire fences. Groups of visitors walk along the path, surrounded by the remnants of brick structures and barracks, now reduced to foundations. Green grass contrasts with the somber history of the site, as the path leads toward a guard tower in the distance.

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers.

This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder.

Auschwitz took time.
