#OnThisDate and the next day in 1988, a big riot broke loose in #TompkinsSquarePark. Oppressed people do rise up, but this time it was the NYPD who started a riot, beating up hippies, Hare Krishna followers, homeless people, partygoers, and reporters.

I've seen a male-to-female transgender individual being harassed verbally pretty badly in the "male" part of a religious shelter. Was moved later to the "female" part. Hopefully no such harassment will take place in this new shelter.

Through his words and leadership, writer James Baldwin exposed and explored issues of race, sexual orientation and class in America. A self-professed "witness to the truth," he forced the country to confront its own painful truths.

He was born #OTD in 1924.

26 million Americans, presumably US citizens, have no government issued identification documents. (Kat Calvin, "American identity in crisis : notes from an accidental activist".) "Undocumented" citizens would make quite a formidable uncompensated labor force.

To get shelter in NYC, under #CallahanVCarey, you have to be poor enough, show up at an intake shelter (open 24/7), and ask for it. This is how it should be.

Families also have to show proof of a "family-type relationship" and document where they stayed for the last 2 years. This is too much.
