Super pleased to annonce that this account is now the official page to follow the STEMDORADO science magazine!
We are a FREE and independent science magazine for kids aged 6–14 published every other month authored by researchers across UK's leading institutions, access for free here:
Our significantly expanded preprint is out. In it we show that pancreatic cancer cells can transfer ribosomes via tunnelling nanotubes and rescue protein synthesis when co-cultured with cells with impaired ribosomal biogenesis.

Fluorescence microscopy picture of mixed stained/unstained cells with CellTracer Green showing partially stained cells due to intercellular transfer of the dye.
ThermoFisher tell us their CellTracker dyes are not transferred to neighbouring cells but we see significant transfer @24h when we mix stained with unstained cells. Any suggestions how to label cells reliably so that we can track distinct populations with no or minimal transfer? 🧪 #fluorescence

A new mechanism for cancer-induced immune evasion. We knew about cancer cells hijacking mitochondria. Now we learn about how their mitochondrial transfer to T cells impairs the tumor immune response.

Instead of listing my publications, as the year draws to an end, I want to shine the spotlight on the commonplace assumption that productivity must always increase. Good research is disruptive and thinking time is central to high quality scholarship and necessary for disruptive research.

The students were excited, asking many questions about why cells transfer mitochondria (MitoTracker-Red) via tunneling nanotubes (actin-green).

Here, an especially long nanotube transmits GFP-expressing oncolytic virus, a mechanism for propagation of the bystander effect.
