A study on 1.7 million people in Hong Kong shows superior hybrid immunity to Covid in people who got vaccinated before infection vs. people who got infected first. "Our findings are a direct rebuttal to arguments for natural immunity," the authors write. doi.org/10.1016/j.va...

Bad framing: ACIP voted to scrap the universal hepatitis B vaccine recommendation for newborns.

Accurate framing: Anti-vax conspiracy theorists appointed to ACIP by Robert Kennedy Jr., who made a fortune as an anti-vax profiteer, voted to expose babies to a preventable, incurable, deadly illness.

Absolutely spot on, with one exception…

…I have absolutely met an angry vegan.

Relatedly, this kind of bullshit is exactly why i took my kids for all of their preK boosters in February.

I never believed them when they said it was about choice, it was obvious they’d make it harder to get shots.

It’s already hard enough to find doses for kids! Last year I called everywhere I could think of and talked to other parents and couldn’t find it, so my kids only got flu shots. I hate that it’ll only get harder for me to protect my kids.

I mean I’d be lying if i said we’ve never been caught in some rain 😬 but so far no mortal peril…

But with responsible parents and prepared for the elements… in our case, slathered with sunscreen and bug spray. And we always have plenty of snacks and water.

My twins hike plenty! Starting around age 3 with ~1 mile on easy trails, then by 4 we could go closer to 1.5 miles and trickier terrain. Last summer (almost 5) we spent a week in the rockies and did a few hikes around 3 miles, one was close to 4.

We’ve always gauged the hikes to their ability!

Same… used to think I hated stuffing, turns out I just hate that stuff, homemade stuffing is amazing.

Used to hate it.

Turns out I’m just a stuffing snob and require bougie stuffing.

My favorite (that I’m making this year) involves a mushroom, leek, and shallot reduction with sage and tarragon, mixed up with huge cubes of sourdough.

I brought in Lisa Frank stickers a while back and it’s now a thing in the lab. It brings us joy to be a bit frivolous… and I feel it as a deliberate rejection of the temptation to take myself too seriously when I put stickers on $10k equipment.

Lol I’d argue that it’s the right side up, that’s how i do it!

The juices pool in the white meat under the skin… it’s objectively correct.

Pack the court in the next admin… bring the bench to 13 and add 4 liberal judges.

It’s the nuclear option but that’s kindof the point. Progressives need to exercise the will to push as hard as the conservatives, with the same level of regard for compromise.

OMG THIS!

The institutional knowledge doesn’t disappear when the doors shutter… we can bring back the experts and leaders and rebuild the organizations, and if we do it right, we can rebuild better than it was before.

I often block people I’ve never interacted with because their replies to a post were aggravatingly stupid and I’m trying to break the habit of arguing online. Sometimes it’s real hard to β€œjust keep scrolling”, I feel like i have to do something… so I block.

Over 10 years ago (long before the most recent anti-DEI movement) Breitbart published an op ed arguing that there should be a cap on the number of women ALLOWED to study in STEM fields. It’s always been a site for the lowest common denominator.

Never met a farmer then?

I remember talking to my grandma about all the machinations necessary to move cross-country with our old dog, and she was like β€œjust leave the dog”. She was a very warm hearted lady, but farmers simply don’t see pets as family.

My sheep dog used to be the type to guard us, but she’s pushing 13/14 so *if* she could hear/see the intruder I’m not sure her hips would support a very effective defense 😬

While we’re at it, you should never assume that women or minorities in leadership positions will support up-and-coming women or minorities. It is often the opposite that’s true.

Just some food for thought πŸ«₯

My point is that, moving forward, if your goal is to support women and minorities in science, you should (must) revise your belief that it’s bizarre.

It’s illogical, sure, but people are illogical (unlike protein structures).

Books have no doubt been written about these dynamics, featuring other contexts. Consider prominent republican women.

What causes some women to tolerate that treatment?
How do they become palatable to misogynistic mentors?

It’s been studied by folk more insightful than me.

I believe in your sincerity that it seems incongruous to you. I just want to point out that it isn’t uncommon, at all.

The most vile misogynistic scientists I’ve ever met had/have female lab members. They were also some of the younger Ass’t Profs in the department, so it’s not β€œold school”
