One minor take-away from the NYC mayor's race for those concerned with AI/synthetic media and its effects on politics and elections might be that, in this particular instance, the guy who made a malicious deepfake lost and the guy who made authentic videos won.

Ultimately, “they destroyed the info environment and no one can know consensus reality” and “they’ve created the architecture for a reality TV show anyone can pretend is real” are different problems demanding different solutions and, importantly, a very different psychic response from citizens

The right is producing content for what is essentially a reality TV show for a national fascist counter-reality that anyone who wants to believe can immerse themselves in and pretend is real (and use as “evidence” for decision-making) but it doesn’t replace actual reality that we can all still see

we should stop pretending people in academia are aligned with our projected political imaginations of higher ed. many CS/AI "luminaries" are obviously engaged in political projects to unravel labor power, belittle human intelligence & creativity, and enhance capacities for state & corporate violence
