He also pointed out that the Israeli athlete’s presence violates the IOC’s own terms as that man has both supported the genocide in Gaza and actively taken part in the Israeli army’s operations.

And if you’re wondering β€œWhy is there a blob in the back?” Well, that’s where the first woman president was supposed to go. More than a century later, it remains unsculpted.

Generations of Britons have been
raised under the false impression that the
'old money' was fiendishly complicated, but
even the briefest perusal of the facts knocks
that debate into touch

The pre-decimalised currency was based on
the 'Troy System' wherein a pennyweight of
silver was equivalent to one old penny. A
pound thus weighed 240 pennyweight and
was equivalent to 'one pound', with two
farthings being a ha'penny. With twenty
four ha'pennies in a shilling and twenty
shillings in a pound that meant that two
shillings and six pence were equivalent to
one half crown, the crown itself being worth
(of course) five shillings of which there were
four in a single pound. If anyone has ever
come up with a simpler way of devising a
currency I would be very glad to see it.

Am reminded of this bit of satire (which I cowrote) 15 or so years ago.

This is so good. Algorithms are killing serendipity and curiosity for generations of people. They see what they see and they know what they know and they may not know that there is a whole lot more to know and discover.

So lemme tell you about @adapalmer.bsky.social's Inventing the Renaissance, which came out last year and absolutely blew me away.

I'd replace half the 1st-year curriculum with this book.

Reading it made me a better historian, and also the kind of person who underlines books.

Plus, it's hilarious.

Not enough people know that in order to be considered for an Eisner Award... you have to SEND YOUR SHIT IN!!!!

The ONLY works considered are those that are submitted. And ANYONE can submit.

If the "I don't like politics" people in your life aren't horrified by surveillance pricing, they are part of the problem.

This is reason number eleventy-million why tech and business need to be regulated by public-minded, independent bodies with big teeth (when pigs fly, I know).

It's the yearly carnival here in my town. Something I abhor but I have to endure. The son just came home drunk and I matched his energy πŸ˜‰. My head is spinning now but it will pass. No need to worry, groceries are done for tomorrow 😁

Also, by reducing professorship to just the teaching, that makes it much easier to replace with contingent labor. After which it's that much easier to tell them what to teach.

'Dutch Girl.' (1899) Marianne Stokes' place amongst important women artists is not confined to those who were followers of Pre-Raphaelitism, she was a pre-eminent painter in tempera and did much to revive its popularity in the late 19thC and the early years of the 20thC.

Degenerate Art Andrea Pitzer on politics and history, the Arctic, and Appalachian exile.

I currently have a newsletter in which I write regularly about how societies devolve into authoritarianism & what that means right now in the US & around the world. It also features essays about my unsettled childhood in West Virginia. Soon, it will also include art, surprises, & links to resources.

It wasn’t imagination, it wasn’t over selling there were absolutely white supremacists, in intellectual positions targeting scholars of color and let it happen , but only now think it’s disgusting

NOT BECAUSE OF THE EFFECTS it had on people of color

But because it was a β€œplot”

We need technology that actually connects us, rather than disconnects or divides us.

This is something I've been thinking about a lot lately. I worry we are just going to make this trend even more extreme with AI "friends".

Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. It’s always a matter of will not resources.
