Mere Walton is inducted into the Independent Writers Caucus Mere has been selected as a member of the prestigious professional organization The Independent Writers Caucus. Mere submitted her new Dramedy Feature GOTTA DANCE! which scored 7/8's on the Blacklist. The film is about a writer who realizes her roommate is a ghost, so she helps the former dancer fulfill her last wish and jitterbug into the afterlife.

GOTTA DANCE is a wonderfully enjoyable time that explores identity and legacy through an escapist lens. Emily honoring her grandmother's legacy is a powerful enough tool that drives the story's emotional core. Emily feels almost plucked from real life thanks to the depth that goes into her construction. We understand so much about her immediately when she responds to her father "Janice is not my mother" - the pain and bitterness of loss that festers inside of her. The writing nicely fleshes out Rita and Cheryl's relationship, and we get windows into their delicate nature ("Did Joseph hurt you?" is a real potent moment, and we don't dismiss it as rhetoric). The writing does a great job with richer supporting roles (Joseph sweet-talking Melanie on page 33 is great character work). The mood and tone are well-balanced, which helps with the pacing. We can see the world-building skills of the writer through the 1950s era, which helps explore Cheryl and Rita's bond. This is a testament to the setting being so densely textured, which also helps pacing because the writing doesn't overindulge in details and nostalgia. The story has an escapist, Amblin vibe to it, and it would not be unfathomable for this to land at a likeminded production company/studio (21 Laps, 2.0, Amblin, Bad Robot, 6th & Idaho, Alcon, etc). The writer is talented, and as a writing sample, this is the type of story that gets a writer on lists, and it could lead to pitching development executives on their open writing assignments.
