I never had a Twitter and was always flabbergasted by the cultural shift towards consuming political content in extremely short-form... I think many of our current political cultural problems (dehumanization, polarization, apathy) come from that medium becoming central to political discourse.

Feeling frustrated that everyone moved to Bluesky (instead of Mastodon) because there are no real privacy settings on Bluesky. All your posts, likes, blocks, and follows, are public with no way to turn that off.

In comparison, Mastodon has many features to limit who can access your content.

Also love the piece on writing an expulsion policy early. Was so frustrated in a recent community experience where I kept trying to insist we write one and got nowhere w/ complacent privileged people. With no clear prior guidelines, it's much easier to discriminate! Coincidentally, I was pushed out👀

The question of mitigating exclusivity and discrimination feels tied up in this, especially considering the history of intentional communities in the US skewing white. Some people's deal breakers can just happen to be more likely for marginalized (esp disabled) folks. Radical imagining necessary.
