Because so many CEDH effects make you discard, GG turns them into profit. If you check out the latest PTW, Dylan recounts a hand that had a Lionβs Eye Diamond and an Ad Naus. Cracking the LED to pitch everything created enough mana to run out GG on turn 1, and to then immediately Ad Naus. Itβs nuts!

Based on Spider-Man having no story arc whatsoever, and Marvel being βRandom Heroes,β Iβd hazard that their license extends to character concepts and core themes only, meaning that yeah, those more recent storytelling arcs are likely off limits.

I think the prevalence of live action Marvel (and the fact that I see Tom Holland dancing online like once a week) has overshadowed the animated version for many. Though youβre right: if they ever did Batman but limited it to The Animated Series, Iβd guess that the response would be near euphoric.

It also, as here, allows for applications outside of creature activations. You can βsneakβ in an attack, but Iβm not sure what it would mean to βninjitsuβ a technique. Partly itβs just better to have a verb version than a noun when it comes to actions.

If you canβt wait til February to get started, however, The Brothersβ War is the best intro to the original frame story. Guildpact, Outlaw: Champions of Kamigawa, and The Gathering Dark are all compelling intros to trilogies in three distinct worlds.

Arguably this one? Thereβs connective tissue between Magicβs stories and worlds, but whereas the game and meta narrative is centered around powerful magic users with the ability to pass between planes, the fictional narratives tend to be grounded in the lives of the people who live there.

Can anyone explain why the third image needed to include an unhelpful annotation of the content, superimposed on the image in a script-like font? Who is this helping? And do we not realize that credibility is lost every time something like this circulates?

Heavy Metal (Golbez EDH) - Commander (Golbez, Crystal Collector)
A deck created using Moxfield.
An incredibly unassuming commander made magnificent by 1) the fact that artifacts are broken; 2) rendering most removal moot by just recurring anything worth killing; 3) a low CMC and a big butt.

While I have no idea how it was first meant to fit in, The Big Score has some interesting designs, and is potentially more coherent than Thunder Junction itself since it isnβt built around βwhat if Gitrog was a horse you can ride?β Maybe that wouldβve been a better on (or off) ramp to the plane.

Over the weekend, someone somewhere noted that some of the UB problems actually feel like Aftermath problems, and it occurs to me that if theyβd tinkered with the Aftermath formula a bit, we mightβve had a way to extend the life of our time on a plane.

If you count story content as completing the little fireside relationship building chats with everyone, thereβs a fair bit, but you could waltz right into the end battles right now if you wanted. (And frankly I might recommend doing so, because itβs easy to overlevel by accident.)

I donβt disagree per se, but Iβd hazard that this is what the push towards collectibles and Secret Lairs is designed to offset. Value gets redistributed to a smaller number of chase printings, and further drives FOMO. Syr Konrad is a 60 cent card, but $60 if you got in at precisely the right moment.

Understandable! No promises, but Iβve seen more Wick the Whorled Mind than Kefka β itβs hard to do Grixis goodstuff when the goodstuff is badstuff. Vivi meanwhile doesnβt have most of his enablers and cheap spells, etc etc.

Taking the lead from @amytheamazonian.bsky.social, I actually recently switched to Standard Brawl and itβs been wonderful. Beyond having a less insane queue, a smaller card pool creates the same sense of discovery you get from Premodern or something, where weird jank has a home.

Some version of the removal thing is clearly still in effect, but Iβd rather queue into Vivi, Rofellos, and someoneβs removal heavy Frodo deck or whatever than just the worst versions of recent nightmares.

They actually updated this system after the accidental expose, but the concept is clearly the same, and if anything itβs now more broken. Amyβs assessment is now that newer commanders (including Rofellos) all get queued together, which makes things 100% worse.

I feel like the biggest parallel for whatβs happening with Magic is LEGO. In the 90βs LEGO was entirely original themes but in 1999 the company announced a partnership with Lucasfilm and it paid off big. LEGO is dominated by licenses today and is doing better than ever. π§΅

But honestly the worst part of all of this (/gestures broadly) is that I somehow feel compelled to argue for the ongoing cultural relevance of The Last of Us vs The Office vs Doctor Who, and honestly Iβd just rather not.

Ehhh I mean, Uncharted ran from 2007 until 2017, and still showed up in pop culture as recently as the movie in 2022. The Last of Us started in 2013, so weβre roughly within the same window.
