Contention, Cohesion, and Beyond: An Overview of Black‐Latinx Relations in the United States Past sociological research on Black-Latinx relations in the United States details experiences that often take one of two routes: contention or cohesion. In this paper, I overview frames that account ....

My new article in Sociology Compass is out β€” it reflects on how we’ve come to understand Black-Latinx relations in the U.S., the complexities that challenge coalition, and questions we still need to ask moving forward. Grateful if you checked it out here πŸ‘‰πŸ½ doi.org/10.1111/soc4...

Contributor: Californians insist β€” immigrants deserve a path to citizenship No matter where, when, to whom and how you ask the question, Golden State voters support giving immigrants without authorization a chance to become citizens.

Sharing an Op-Ed that Cristina Mora and I wrote in the @latimes.com. We collected 2 waves of poll data among CA voters over the past year, pre and post election. No matter how, when, or who we asked, we found overwhelming support for a path to citizenship. Pls share: www.latimes.com/opinion/stor...

As we fight tyranny, we build solidarity. From solidarity, we draw courage. Surrounded by courageous people and institutions, we more easily find courage within ourselves to keep fighting. Remember: tyranny is only possible if people submit to it.

A booming U.S. stock market doesn’t benefit all racial and ethnic groups equally Nearly two-thirds of White families (66%) owned stocks directly or indirectly, compared with 39% of Black families and 28% of Hispanic families.

"Overall, 58% of U.S. families had some sort of exposure to the stock market in 2022, the highest level ever recorded...The median value of those holdings was $52,000; the mean value was $489,500."

The first and most important thing to know about last night's Exec order is that it's intended to break current law and allow people throughout the federal gov look at yr tax returns. Beyond that it's intended to compel states to turn over all their data to the fed govt.

We gave a short survey to White Christians & asked them to pick between our govt prioritizing economic prosperity with more immigrants or reducing immigration even if it hurts prosperity.

Majorities of White Christian nationalists would tank our economy if it meant preserving the ethnic status quo.

Two-panel graph analyzing U.S. House Elections from 2006-2024. Left panel shows Democratic vote share increases as turnout gap with Republicans narrows, with a positive trend line (46-56% on y-axis). Right panel shows Democratic vote share decreases as party positioning moves from liberal to conservative, with a negative trend line. Election years are plotted as dots, with blue dots (2006, 2008, 2018) indicating Democratic House majorities and red dots indicating Republican majorities. Both graphs demonstrate that Democrats perform better with higher turnout and more liberal positioning.

1/🧡 Following up on our study featured in NYT today, this figure provides a macro-level view:

Dem vote shares rise with turnout parity (left) but fall with party-level ideological moderation (right). This suggests mobilizing base voters > persuading swing voters by moving to the center.

Of course, we’d love to see these numbers decrease as much as possible. But comparing raw numbers over time dramatically distorts the risk/safety. There are 100 million more people living in the U.S. today compared to 1968.

I don’t want to add to the doomscrolling. Still, I am pissed that in addition to having to endure this era, younger generations may be forced to spend decades (if not centuries) debating its true impacts with bad faith actors in their efforts to produce a fuller humanity.

1/ I am seeing a lot of comments on the slashing of NIH support along the lines of β€œuniversities should just spend their huge endowments.”

I’m the last person to cheer on the institutional stratification rising endowments have contributed to. But let me explain why this is not a solution.
