Assembly and DFM are those things you dont really learn in school, but somehow it’s so satisfying when everything clicks into place!

We're in times where thieves can identify as artists, but people can't identify as themselves.

The Big, Beautiful Bill assigns each American a billionaire who will live the
American dream for you. You can check in on your billionaire at intervals and see how he is using your money. Maybe he's building a 19th pool. Maybe he's buying himself some formerly public land! Maybe he's taking a Supreme Court justice on a dream vacation! Maybe he is reupholstering the Statue of Liberty to hide the poem.

These tools were sold under the pretence of making work faster, easier, and producing better products.

Yet more often than not, we find they make the world duller, work less meaningful, and the products worse, while enriching the few.

And people are catching on.

There are so many fucking grifters out there and not a single goddamn one of them knows what the fuck they are talking about, about the history of art or photography or its intersection with technology. They don't care about how the best photographers have a relationship to the people and places and things they take photos of, that the intent must be laser sharp and pointed especially in the moment of capture. They don't give a shit about the differences between different kinds of cameras, lenses, or how film develops colors in a way that your iphone flattens. Just say some bullshit about how "realistic painters thought they were going to be replaced too," without any idea of what that means. Monet?? Impressionism? Post-Impressionism? Much of that art movement comes out of influence and cultural exchange with Japan and East Asia, not some fear of being replaced by photographers. Be so fucking for real. These people cannot fathom artists being inspired by other artists, though. We are just arbitrary talking points distilled into reactions that never happened in response to new technology. I wish Monet could have beaten your ass with a tire iron.

"artists reacting to ai are the same as how painters reacted to photography" i keep seeing this take and want to commit violence for real

Development sketches from my time as a freelance footwear designer (deckers x lab Baja). I don’t often do pencil sketches anymore, but it’s always such a treat!

Absolutely! Sketching is an act of exploration. I think the way sketching is being undervalued rn, it’s going to be important to remind students the idea that each sketch is a step along the journey to a product. The destination is often not a pretty illustration.

Info on its energy gobbling should be in every news story about AI. It is newsworthy. It is inseparable from the tech itself.

I recently gave a presentation to some ID first years about design sketching and the value of loose but clear communication. It was so nice to chat with the young designers and encourage them to push the boundaries of design sketching.

Why design goes wrong and how to set it right, part 1 At the root of design's crisis is an incentives crisis throughout tech. But we have tools that let us cut through the magical thinking of feature factories - if we're willing to use them.

UX design is in disarray. The idea of design-for-use has been replaced with design-for-sales, and its incentives (make more features so that you have more shit to sell) don't align with user-centered work.

In this issue, I investigate the ground-level view of how this happened and how to stop it.
