We envision an equitable food system that:Β
*PROMOTES DIGNITY from end to end along the food supply chain
*IS REGENERATIVE rather than extractive, building rich soils instead of depleting
*PROMOTES HEALTHY OUTCOMES by nourishing the underserved and disenfranchised food seekers of LA

Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day! The acorn is a nutrient rich traditional food source for Native Peoples in CA. Despite colonization, acorns remain an important part of culture, and the acorn harvest takes place around this time! Traditional acorn dishes include soup, bread, and mush.

We are excited to focus even more on local sourcing, and we also believe that continuing to work with farmers in farther-flung, in-state regions is meaningful 1) to increase access to seasonal produce varieties and 2) to connect farmers in rural areas to the unique market that Los Angeles provides.

The LA Urban Rural Roundtable defines β€˜foodshed’ as a geographical area that produces food for a region’s occupants; the LA foodshed encompasses 10 counties in Southern California, including all those bordering LA County, and extending up to San Luis Obispo and down to Imperial. 🧡(2/3)

Farm2People works with small- and mid-sized farms in CA up to 400 miles from downtown LA. Though our food access reach remains local, our support of farmers is regional. We are currently engaging with the concept of the Los Angeles foodshed as a means of increasing our emphasis on local food. 🧡(1/3)

Who Will Control U.S. Agriculture? | Farm Action In 1973, a land-grant university laid out six possible futures for our food system. We break down how these models predicted the path we’ve taken and the better ones we still have the power to choose.

This short and interesting thought piece from Farm Action paints a vivid picture of the different potentials for US ag policy and also demonstrates why Farm2People is needed.

We believe in healthy soil, prioritizing small- and mid-sized farms, lifting up disadvantaged growers, and providing nutritious food to food seekers.

Our work is twofold: we financially support independent California growers by purchasing their produce at the farmer-set rate, and then we use that food to increase access to fresh fruits and vegetables for food insecure friends and neighbors in Los Angeles.
