the first page of the zine. Reads: 1. I want to get old with you — these days, this thing that we’ve been saying to each other feels like the most radical thing a girl could say. We say it to each other after sex, we say it to each other on the way home from picking up the kids from school, we said it to each other when we were sick together for the first time, taking care of each other and sweating it out into each others arms. You asked me last night if I’ve ever met any really old trans women. No, I haven’t really met that many trans women at all, baby, I live in the country, as you know. You lived in NYC, not for long, but for long enough. You were there long enough to come out, to walk through gentrified Chelsea with the old queens, pointing out landmarks, eating popsicles, telling you stories from another time. You lived there long enough to find your trans mom, to sit in empty churches and pray, to go home a girl. Those old queens I met in NY saved my life, I think. That walk was the first time i had ever introduced myself as a girl, and spent time in a group of only trans women. It flipped the story for me, let me see that I was really only at the beginning of a new life instead of at the end of one. I used to never think that I would live past 25, I wasn’t exactly planning on it. These girls were grandmothers, both biological as well as with extended families of girls they’d housed and loved and birthed though the years. They had partners and friends and care and joy. I miss having old trans women around, it’s not something I have access to anymore, here in the country. Sometimes I feel fucking ancient myself. I never let myself...
